spotlightlover here, posting a report for Permaswooned, ncgurrl, artquest, weak sauce, LG, kungfuwaynewho, Bina, Salamander, and claysmorningstar.
We seemed to have survived the PROC On-Air Hollywood Blvd. Slumber Party. Of course our feet hurt, our ears are numb, and weve all become rednecks from the sunburn.
As a reward we got to see Clay. Really close. In fact, we got to see three Clays no, four, because we had at least ten minutes of his backside up against a railing. Nice tush. In jeans that fit.
So, lets see what you want to know first. Lets assume that you saw this on TV or will or will download the show. Let us tell you what you didnt see.
First, we are all pregnant. Several times. Except Mr. Swooned.
At 9:30, we got to see Rehearsal Clay. We were all still behind the barricades waiting to be let into the bullpen, so we were about 50 feet away. He came out in a dark grey hoody with 22 Surf on the front in yellow letters. It was zipped up to the breastbone, and he wouldnt take the hood off his head, probably because his hair wasnt done. Underneath he had a green t-shirt, which hung out the back because the hood was hiking up the jacket in the back, and of course a white t-shirt under all that. Regular old worn-out jeans, fitting medium-well. Waldo was quiescent. Salamander saw some kind of necklace, perhaps a chain.
He waved when he first came out, giving that eyebrows-up, lips pursed, Who, me? look. The crowd roared. Then he talked with the band, the crew, had his back to us for a minute. At one point he was kidding with a female backup singer and pushed her out in front, handed her the mic, and stood behind her mic stand as if to sing backup. The crowd roared. While the band was setting up, he came forward with his mic and said, Who all camped out last night? We all screamed and waved. I slept at home in my warm snug bed, said Clay. The crowd roared. He waved and smiled at different people and thanked everybody for coming out. The crowd roared.
Then they started The Way. He sang a couple of phrases and then started to gesture, at the stage manager, then one of the guitarists, then to someone else. Director Clay letting everyone know what he wanted. Pointing to the keyboardist because the opening cue was missed. Singing all the time without missing a beat. Sounded damn good. He sang the whole song. The crowd roared. Then the crew twiddled a little and the stage manager made Ryans announcement they were going to do it again! He was even better this time and enjoyed it more - at one point he was at the side of the stage doing the air-drum. The crowd roared. After he finished, he waved a few times and was gone.
After the rehearsal they let us into the bullpen. Security was pretty good at making people walk slowly and behave. We got right up to the front, but there was a red rope stanchion in front of us we should have known. This turned out to be where they brought in VIPs, who were mostly friends of the crew and producers. They stood right in front of us. We were pissed. Fortunately we were still able to get a good view when it counted.
Some of saw the Bellboy several times. He is gorgeous, with impossibly long blond locks for a man. Kind of a smaller, less-smarmy Fabio. He had a bit of bed-head in the back, as if he teased the hair up and forgot to comb it down. Hee.
About five minutes before the show started, Clay and Kelly came out onto a balcony above the stage and were being interviewed. The crowd roared. Clay and Kelly turned and waved a couple of times. Mostly they stood with their backs to us and we got dueling tushes. No contest. Clay was wearing a white shirt with the cuffs rolled up, his beautiful forearms hanging out and wearing a very masculine, silver watch. A different pair of jeans. That fit. Really, really well. A clump of girls to my left yelled, Nice butt, Clay! And it was. Once on the balcony, he teased us by suddenly turning to look over his shoulder. The crowd roared. We were his puppets. The show was about to start, and the stage manager was yelling at us over the microphone, I know whos up there, but dont look up there! Look into the boom camera! Youll ruin the shot! Fortunately for him, Clay and Kelly left and moved inside just before the show started.
Permaswooned had brought a sign that said ProC and I tried to wave it at the boom camera during the opening. Dont know if it got on camera.
Bina was the only one of us inside the studio. She was too blinded by the light of Clay and Ryan to make a coherent report. All she can remember from commercial breaks is a cameraman bumping into Clay and asking him to move. Out in the courtyard, we could hear the interviews but not what was happening at the breaks. Clay and Kelly sounded cute together, cant wait to see it.
Kelly did a good performance of The Trouble with Love. She looked good in her white blouse. There was lots of Kelly love, but nothing like the Clay love. I was unfortunate enough to be standing next to two Kelly fans who were quite rude and whiny. Gay Aiken, one of them kept saying. I finally turned to her and said, We heard you the FIRST five times.
Finally. Finally the moment arrives. Clay came out and stood with Ryan on the stage. He looked beautiful [tm Permaswooned]. He had hedgehog hair and needs a haircut [tm spot]. Lots of waves and smiles to the crowd. A hug or I love you gesture to someone at the right side of the stage. The nice-fitting jeans had some kind of pattern around the pockets. He was wearing a really sexy BELT with a big, square, tarnished-silver buckle maybe pewter. Gah. But the shoes! Green, yellow, and black sneakers! So funny. He was talking to Ryan, acknowledging different groups in the crowd a LOT. Looking really, really relaxed and happy to be there. Were back on camera, Ryan introduces him, and he sings. Like a god. This part you saw. He was much better than Kelly at working the entire stage, acknowledging the crowd on the balconies and in different parts of the plaza. Several times during the song he picked one person (or appeared to) to sing to and killed them dead. Eye-fucks ran rampant. ncgurrl reports that he stood on the sides of his feet at one point in the song.
We dont know much of what happened after that because we were all dead. Or pregnant. Or both. During break, he shook hands with band and crew members, cheek-kissed one of the backup singers. Waved at the crowd.
Then we had a very exciting moment. He spotted a little girl, about five years old , at the very edge of the barricade, and smiled at her with a great loving look. Then, before anyone knew what was happening, he suddenly walked to the stairs and came straight for the barricade. The security men seemed caught off guard and moved fast to follow him. It all happened very fast he was within five feet of the barricade and there was a sudden surge toward him of about fifteen people. The guards immediately pushed back against the barricade and nothing bad happened -
Clay knelt down and took a stuffed dog from the little girl and spoke to her, and then quickly moved back toward the stage. He was five feet from me.
Then Kelly came onstage and Ryan ended the show interviewing both of them.
So you think thats all, right? All the juicy, gory details? STAY TUNED, because NO ONE else has THIS scoop!
So were sitting at the window of the California Pizza Kitchen, composing this post and remembering every tiny detail. Were still reeling from a massive Clack OD, when Bina spots The Bellboy just below us pacing the sidewalk. A large black SUV pulled up to the curb, and then Roger was getting into it, and suddenly there was Clay with a whole entourage maybe eight people getting into the SUV. We all screamed and he must have been able to hear us through the window, because he looked up toward the window and we waved wildly, and he waved back and smiled! He came around to the back of the SUV and loaded his own bag, then went back to the side door. He looked up toward the plaza and waved at some other people, then he looked up at us AGAIN and saw Permaswooned madly waving our ProC sign, and he pointed at the sign, gave a big smile and another wave. Then he got in the back seat; the hatch was still open and he bent his head down to see the sign again and waved AGAIN!
And that's it from spotlightlover. Over and out.
Quote:Today was my thirteenth dose of Live Clay. I made a joke to Bina about having triskaidekaphobia. Twelve times before, I had seen Clay live and in person. But I had never, ever seen the Clay I saw today.
The most interesting thing about live Clay is watching him in non-performance moments, unguarded moments. In every single appearance I attended before today, I saw glimpses of how else to put this unhappy Clay, ill-at-ease Clay. I never saw him at an appearance where he seemed completely happy and relaxed with whatever was happening at the time. He often seemed irritable, or fearful, or experiencing some other difficult emotion. Was I projecting? I dont think so. Im fairly intuitive about body language and facial expressions. I have no stake in an unhappy Clay. In point of fact, it often made ME unhappy to see it.
Today changed all that. I got to watch him much, much more than I expected to. And in every single moment he seemed relaxed, joyful, completely at ease, in tune with those around him HAPPY. And he shared that with his fans, over and over on this day. Ive never seen him interact so much with an audience as he did today. Understandably, he tended to ignore people or groups who screamed at him. But waves, happy faces, applause, and even signs were enjoyed and acknowledged. I was astonished, terrified, and elated all at once when he spontaneously and fearlessly approached that little girl in the thick of a crowd of love-crazed fans.
His performance, while masterful, was relaxed and sincere and unselfconscious. And simply breath-taking.
And as we watched the studio interviews, Bina and I said repeatedly to each other, Who IS this guy? Yes, he was the same Clay we always loved, but seemingly more mature, more at ease giving honest answers to questions, no longer deflecting his success or the waves of love coming from his fans.
I dont know what the hell theyre putting in his water, but I hope theres an unlimited supply. This is a Clay I could love forever, because he seems finally to love his own life the life we all fought so hard to give him.
I cant WAIT to see this concert.
