Variety taking stage at Academy

INTERLOCHEN - An almost idol, a longtime queen and a gem with local ties will take the stage at Interlochen this summer.
American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken, "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin and former Interlochen Arts Academy student Jewel are three of the 33 headliners this summer for the Interlochen Arts Festival, to be announced today.
"Clay Aiken will be a big draw for us," said William Wood, Interlochen Center for the Arts' director of presentations.
"Aretha Franklin hasn't been here in over a decade, so it's wonderful to bring her back," he added.
Pop star Jewel is back for the second time in three years. She attended Interlochen Arts Academy in the early 1990s.
Wood called the schedule for this summer a "banner year" and said organizers took into account comments from many people about who they'd like to see.
"We heard from a lot of people about who they wanted us to bring up," he said. "You asked for them. You're getting them."
Folk fans will have new and old artists to choose from. Classic folkie Gordon Lightfoot will appear, as will Arlo Guthrie on his "Alice's Restaurant Massacree 40th Anniversary Tour."
For newer folk lovers, Ani DiFranco, once known as a "folk punk" artist, will make an appearance.
Country fans can see the bluegrass of Alison Krauss and Union Station or country hit-maker Brad Paisley.
Classic rock fans may see '80s rocker Pat Benatar with her longtime guitarist and husband Neil Giraldo.
Tickets will go on sale Friday at 9 a.m. They may be purchased online at tickets.interlochen.org, by phone at (800) 681-5920 or 276-7800 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
