Quote:The Three Most Important Things That Happened:
1) I'd spoilered myself on every bootleg my computer hamsters could tackle, so I'd been slightly worried I'd be bored or critical/comparing when finally going to my first concert in Seattle. Silly me. After an hour-long swim in the currents of Clay's live aural embrace, all the molecules in my brain were purring, with whole-body shivery ripples reverberating. When he did that new low-low note on the last "the-a-a-a-a-a" in The Way, I think I actually groaned with delight in inescapable reaction to what that did to my insides. (It's all dangerous, but his most lethal weapon is that lower register). I remember passing mel as I stumbled out after Clay's set and saying, "If he can do THAT with THIS material, can you imagine what he'd be like with great material?" (She said, "And that WILL happen, it will" ) . I won't underestimate the potency of Clay live again. It is now my heavily preferred drug of choice, and I'm ready to freebase.
2) I finally got straight all the boardnames/real names/faces of the Oregon/Washington/Canadian/Montana/Idaho Clackhouse contingent. Feels like family now. (No, in a good way!!).
3) Saw Spokane Falls from bridge, through park on way to arena - some crashingly gorgeous currents of H2O, and saw they are runnable!!! (How can Clay not like water? It is the only other thing on Earth as lusciously delicious as his voice).
Seattle Stuff I Remember:
Clackho and I find the Seattle Weekly free rag "pre-review drivel of doom", and I courteously remove that page from the remaining weeklies in the box.
At the meerkat meet, I am delighted beyond reason to win pink shoelaces as a prize for "not even trying" to win the mixer game. See - slacking off pays!!! I love the meerkats! (I bet nobody got prizes specifically for doing nothing at the Clayboard dinner!)(Thanks, BeeBarBee!)
My amazing upgrade Seattle seat: Row 5, aisle, edge/end of catwalk. Nothing finer!
Beaus: Liked first song, acoustic harmonies not bad. Then second song sugary/stupid and I notice the pastel belts and Charlie's Angel moves. Diabetic ketosis sets in by song four.
As those of us on end seats by grinding-side catwalk try to align ourselves next to it as Clay's set is about to start, one ironically extremely tall lady, hereafter known as the Hippity-Hoppity Psycho Easter Basket Lady (end seat aisle 4) has a hissy fit, worried that she will not get to see, and ALERTS SECURITY that we should NOT be standing at the catwalk. What you have to picture is that the only person in front of her is mel, who is approximately three feet shorter than her. Security responds, however, and they tell us we will all have to go back to our seats, because "everyone in this section will need to be sitting down when Clay is singing anyway." We laugh at that, and during the concert we cooperate amiably whenever security tells us to step back by retreating a millimeter, then stepping back up a second later.
Clay was SO, SO good. So happy, energetic, healthy, playful, and full of piss and joy! I got the feeling he was really happy to finally be healthy in Seattle and able to give us a killer show. (It sucks that he broke his foot, but we didn't know about that until Spokane - he must have done it after he got out of view exiting the stage after OA). Seattle got a totally "ON" show.
Seattle should be known as the concert where he "left his hat on" for everything but the acoustic set. He didn't just leave it on, though. He created new stylistic poses with the hat, he played with the hat, and he was hot and cool, stylish and manly, and funny and adorable with the hat. I felt the fedora-love bigtime.
He SO teased us as he had mel's cell phone and we were screaming that Grace was from New Zealand: "Who down there is from New Zealand? You aren't from New Zealand, are you?" when he knew what we meant.
My only sometimes-obstacle to having the absolute best standing-spot in the arena was the aforementioned very tall, slightly psychotic Clay fan sporting a large easter basket, which she told the security guard was a special "non-chocolate easter basket for Clay." Luckily, there was plenty of standing room for me to keep making necessary adjustments to keep eyes focussed on the Aiken, but it was not a small challenge, as Easter Basket Lady did three things dynamically and repeatedly throughout Clay's set: 1) Extended basket out to catwalk hoping Clay would take it, approximately every 2 minutes, regardless of what song with what nuance Clay was doing (Clay ignored it - I adore how smart that man is!); 2) Jumped up high and down, and up and down again, over and over, emitting piercing shrieks at inopportune moments, thus making her functionally 9 feet tall; 3) In case it got too easy for me to move to one side when she was jumping up and down, she threw in some major side-to-side swaying, the diameter of the sway radius being about 5 feet. I got very good at adjusting and keeping my awesome closeup sightline until she started doing #2 and #3 at the same time, at which point I used my teacher voice and told her that she could sway or hop up and down, but she could NOT do both. (To her credit, she accepted this edict rather nicely).
Excepting Bouncy Psycho lady mini-maneuver obstructions, I don't think I took my eyes off Clay for a second; I was happily mesmerized. At one point, Jakob, Quiana, and Angela were crossing behind him doing some spiffy dancing moves, and I realized that there just wasn't going to be any chance to check them out without taking my eyes off Clay. (Kelly's set proved a good time to catch them, though; they are really having a blast now, so much more dynamic, loose, and playful than in the early clips).
In Clay's intro to acoustic set: "I'm going to sing REAL soft (whispered). Then he waited a bit for audience to quiet down, but the screams and applause did not even waver. "Okaaay then, I guess I'm gonna sing real loud!! Ramp up the mic! (smiles and starts MOAM).
The acoustic was gorgeous (as it all was), but after a security guard was loudly talking (socializing) right next to me through FOG and WINY, I got brave and risked a Neanderthal comeback by saying to him, "Can you PLEASE not talk while he's SINGING!!!" (He looked surprised that it would matter, but just said "ok" ) .
Clay was simply right next to me/in front of me for ISY. I just melted into his eyes and performance. I have no memory of specifics, just the feeling that I'd run an intense river who's call I could never resist.
All the songs I didn't mention were wonderful too; savored every note.
Oh yeah, Psycho Hippity-Hop Easter Basket Lady was not discouraged, and proceeded to offer basket up to Kelly whenever she was on the catwalk! Kelly finally took it, set it down on catwalk, and gave a heartfelt "Thank you so much!!!" (Good thing she won't know it's Clay's until later; can we say tacky?).

Quote:Ok, here is my Seattle concert recap (I know that is it waaaaaaaay late, but I just had to post it before most of the St. Paul crew posted their recaps). Many of the details in this post are really for me and my scrapbook, but I've put in headings so you can scroll as you see fit. But if you like rambling pointless stories, enjoy!
Getting to Washington
As with all trips, I had a horrible time getting out of town on time. Delays included leaving work late, last minute packing and emergency carpet stain. *sigh* As well, the trip is a 14 hr drive, which we split over two days. Now, I should also mention that I dislike driving, I dislike curves and I dislike driving in the dark. So it only makes sense that I drive through the mountains after 9 pm. The mountains are actually really gorgeous, but it is hard to appreciate them when you only see blobs. But we did see tons of deer on the road, which was nice but kinda scary.
Well, we finally made it to Seattle and I was feeling really good because it was a beautiful day and we made the trip in fairly decent time. I wasnt even feeling tired as I was running on adrenaline and we were starting to get really pumped for the concert. We ran into a traffic jam on the main highways and also as we tried to get to our hotel. Of course, then we also got lost and had to find the long way back to our hotel (because I was too stooopid to print out a map from the Internet). Once we got to the hotel, there was some trouble with our room as the hotel clerk said that MotherConfessor hadnt given us permission to enter the room, but I didnt fret over it because I needed to get to the concert.
The hotel was close enough to the Seattle Centre, but the Seattle Centre is made up of many buildings and we wandered around for a bit. I tried to find the PRoC party at Michelangelos but as we got there, everyone had just left about five minutes before! I thought we had plenty of time because the concert started at 7:30pm, but it turned out the concert was at 7pm. Thank goodness we arrived in time!
Well, I was worried because I was supposed to meet MotherConfessor and Kylenn, who was supposed to buy my extra tickets, at the dinner and we didnt make other plans to meet. Luckily, deborah760and InNotOf and her friend were still at the restaurant and they knew what these ladies looked like. They kindly offered to help me find these ladies once we got into the concert, but we had no luck. *Note to self never try to find Internet friends without getting a physical description of what they look like or having a back-up plan for meeting!*
The opening act, the Beu Sisters were cute had decent voices, but pretty bad songs. I thought the melody and harmonies to their Stop, stay away from my sister was horrible, although I liked the music. I was impressed by the number of songs they had on soundtracks and stuff although Im not sure I would buy their CD.
But I couldnt really enjoy the opening act because I was so worried about my extra tickets (poor Canadian student plus USD tickets = much poorer and very sad Canadian student). Luckily during the intermission, I found deborah760 who pointed out MotherConfessor who pointed out Kylenn! But of course this happened after I embarassingly asked some strangers if they knew my Internet friends. Oops! Anyways, long story summarized, all tickets were taken care of and I could finally relax now that I didnt have to worry about the extra tickets.
Im going to say sorry now because everything about the concert was a blur. I spent the whole night mesmerized by the Aiken. I rarely looked at the other singers or the jumbotron. I love reading other peoples recaps of the concerts because there were all these details that I missed. I hadnt spoiled myself for the concert except for reading the set list. All I know is that I LOVED LOVED LOVED it! Anyways, the concert went by waaaaaaaaay too fast, but it was a fabulous concert even if I dont remember most of the details.
When the lights went down, the roar of the crowd was really loud. I didnt tell my friend about the entrance from the back, but some nice lady beside us (who turned out to be the lovely Salamander) told her to turn around. And I loved Kyrie! What a perfect song for Clay and what a great entrance! Clay was less than five feet beside me and then he really lingered on the stairs. My friend tried to take lots of pictures and video, but they didnt turn out that great. I really enjoyed being able to relax and enjoy the music, but unfortunately my friend wasnt feeling that good and the loud music hurt her ears. Plus, she heard helium voice, while I didnt. My overall impression of the concert was that it was fantastic. Clay was ON! The vocals were awesome, I didnt catch him flubbing any lyrics (although MotherConfessor said he messed up on NMSS) and he was so adorable being a dancing fool.
And I was sooooooooo happy to see the blue outfit and fedora! I knew it was going to be a good concert then because it was one good looking outfit. I would have preferred if he took off the hat earlier, but when he took it off during the acoustic set and did that cute bit with Angela and Quiana, I almost swooned. When Clay first took off his hat, he held it in front of his hair and looked first at Quiana and then at Angela and asked how his hair was. Then he revealed the hair and it was sticking straight up into a point. Awww. But one of the gals pushed it down and it was then almost natural (which I loved!). Then Clay and Quiana had their little chat about Quianas hair (the if you cant achieve it, weave it and if you cant grow it, sew it). Yeah, weve heard this patter before it was really cute live. Love that Cliggle!
And when he introduced the acoustic set, he whispered that he was going to sing really softly, but the fans kept screaming so he just giggled and said something like I guess not. MoaM was just gorgeous and I loved it during WINY, he was emphasizing all the stops at the end of phrases (I think someone called it the crisp endings). He also did cute little hand motions whenever he did the pauses at the end of the phrases. Ive been listening to the mp3s of the acoustic set and I love it when all the singers sing love. *swoon*
And my friend loved the little bit Clay did with the cellphone. I love to hear him talk and when I heard New Zealand, I knew it had to be reddecca. When Clay did his little fangirly bit, he turned around and used one hand to fan himself. Very cute.
Then Clay pointed up and said something like this way to Canada. This is because a bunch of fans in the lower section near the right stage had yellow arrows and was pointing it up. Those fans were hilarious because during one of the slow songs (I think it was The Way), when everyone was swaying, you could see all the arrows swaying, but not at the same time or in the same direction. Lol. Anyways, then he asked who was from Canada and of course a ton of us screamed. As well, someone had a sign asking Clay if he knew how many Canadians were there. He asked if the sign-holder knew and when she didnt Clay said he didnt want to answer unless he could find out if he was right.
And as mentioned earlier, he didnt do the Invisible tease, but I thought it was hilarious seeing the tug live. Im sorry, I think it is more funny than sexy, but it was cool. And I thought WDC was awesome. At first the arrangement threw me, but I thought Clay and Angela did a great job conveying the emotion of the song. It was nice to see Clay being sensual.
Like all really dedicated Clay fans, I waited until Kellys set started and then made a big kerfuffle (like that? Ive always wanted to use that word) as I stomped out of the arena chanting Clelly sucks, Clelly sucks!. Ok, not really, but after Clays set my friend wanted to get some merchandise. The lineups were crazy, but like all the other concerts, most of the sales were for Clay. The lineups took a long time, so we ended up missing most of Kellys performance. What we did hear was very loud and bass-heavy, but not bad. We had some Kelly fans behind us and they kept screaming and hollering, although I do believe that they liked Clay too.
Actually, we got really lucky with our 10th row tickets because my friend and I are short so I was worried about the people in front of us. We were surrounded by males and although they were into Clays performance, they sometimes sat down and allowed us to have a better view. Hee. And everyone is right about the roar that goes through the crowd when Clay comes out during Open Arms. I was impressed by Kelly and Clay, but that may be because I was just awestruck to see Clay.
As for my friends impression of Clay, she enjoyed it but she thought he tried to hard to get into his fedora character. In other words, she though he was actually quite cocky, especially his hand motions during ISY and NMSS. She kept saying he was acting like Justin Timberlake (hee. Never thought Id hear that), but she really enjoyed it when Clay acted all dorky and stuff.
Post concert recap
The post concert get-together was great because I finally got to meet people who I only knew through posts (so sorry I missed meeting others at the dinner). We all crowded in McMenamins (or however you spell it) and took over four tables. You know, I love how many posters talk about how quiet they usually are (Im looking at you akcanuck and Ms Marmalade) and yet they can chatter for hours! Lol. Five years ago, I would have laughed hysterically if anyone suggested that I would meet people online and then go and meet them because as everyone knows, all internet people are ugly and mean and/or 60 year old plumbers from Hoboken. Luckily for me, all of the meerkats are really kind, friendly and really cute! And Im usually pretty shy in large groups too, but I had no problems chatting with everyone. Savonette and labretonne really are a hilarious pair, especially when they were talking about Waldo in front of colormered and Mr Colormered?. I also met tweelers (the hilarious letter writer), the sweet lissaville (what a great concert recap!), the unpronounceable Qoatg, the lovely Unico, my wonderful roommate and traveling partner MotherConfessor, the friendly Salamander (I cant believe I missed my chance to meet MrSalamander!), the fantastically fangirly mel ladi, the gorgeous (and non-imaginary) Bronwynne, amazing waterbaby (who actually remembered some of my posts!), the charming clackho (wow, Im not sure if my mom would like that I called a ho charming. It sounds kinda funny. Hee), and the awesome BeeBarBee (who organized the dinner) (I'm sure I missed a couple of people, and I'm sorry, but please forgive but my memory was shot because of the long drive and the lack of sleep). I thought it was really funny that as mel was leaving the bar, she kept declaring how drunk she was. Plus, she was so fangirly (surprise, surprise ) over the phone that Clay touched!
Im glad I got to meet yall, but Im sorry I didnt chat with everyone. My only regret was that I brought my non-internet friend and she wasnt feeling too well and she was stressed about her schoolwork, so she wasnt as friendly and may have been a bit overwhelmed. L I was feeling really pumped and excited at the bar, but as soon as we hit the hotel room, I was out like a light. Since we had a mix-up with our hotel room (we only got one king size bed for three people instead of the two queen we asked for), we had made arrangements for MotherConfessor to stay with Qoatg, Ms Marmalade and Salamander, my friend and I went straight to bed. Boy, were we surprised the next morning to find out that MotherConfessor had slept on the floor. Darn that Comfort Suites! And I forgot which online system MotherConfessor used, but dont use it!
So this will end the first half of my trip (yes, I know. I can't believe I still have more to write about Spokane!). I don't know how to upload my photos yet, but I'm working on it. Expect a link soon (I hope *crosses fingers*).
ETA - Wow! Do I win the award for longest post evah? Or at least the award for the post most people scrolled past?
